Our vision therapy optometrists Dr. Jason Holtom and Dr. Tedra Kindopp have been specifically trained to use the following tests, for children and adults to evaluate several important areas of vision that often go unchecked during standard "20/20" visual acuity tests. Our comprehensive vision exams evaluate the following:

Acuity at Near and at a Distance

We test how clearly and accurately a person sees at both 20 feet and at close reading distance.

Focusing Skills

We test how well and quickly the eyes are able to adjust their focus on objects at different distances. The eyes’ ability—or inability—to rapidly and automatically adjust focus affects everything from participating in sports to reading and writing in educational and work settings. For example, children with focusing problems may struggle with school work.

Eye Teaming

These tests asses how well your eyes work as a team. Problems with eye teaming can cause depth perception and eye-hand coordination difficulties.

Eye Movement

These tests determine how well the eyes can perform tracking and fixing functions; for example, how well can a student go from reading a line of text at reading distance to following along with the teacher at the front of a class room. Tracking and fixation also affect hand-eye coordination and reaction time.

Eye Health

Assessing eye health is critical at every age and is an important part of every eye exam.  At The Eye Studio, we have implemented the latest digital imaging technology in our practice in an effort to provide you with the most comprehensive eye health examination.

Digital Imaging

We offer the Optomap Retinal Exam for all patients over age 5. This fast, painless procedure generates a high resolution, digital, colour image of your eye in less than a second. With the Optomap, we can see the back of your eye (the retina) and provide early detection of diseases that affect not only your eyes, but your overall health. These high definition images become a permanent part of your health record so that we can track and detect any changes in your eye health. Learn more at www.optos.com.

We are also proud to utilize the Optical Coherence Tomographer (OCT) which enables us to detect and diagnose blinding diseases like glaucoma and macular degeneration earlier than ever before. The OCT is a huge step forward for comprehensive and preventative eye care. Using high-tech OCT technology, we are able to view a three-dimensional, cross sectional scan of your eye. It’s very similar to ultrasound but uses light waves instead of sound waves. It’s completely painless and allows us to instantly diagnose eye conditions – at an earlier stage than we were able to do using older diagnostic technology.

With the OCT software, we are able to build a case file and analyze and compare your current scan with previous scans. This analysis gives us vital information and allows us to prevent further damage or recommend treatment at a much earlier stage – safeguarding your sight for the future.

Our doctors will be scanning anyone over age 40, patients with personal or family history of glaucoma, macular degeneration, diabetes, hypertension and those with unexplained visual changes.

We recommend that all children begin vision testing at least at the ages of 6 months, 3 years (prior to preschool entry) and at age 5 (the summer before kindergarten). Early diagnosis of problems like Amblyopia (Lazy Eye), Convergence Insufficiency (near vision disorder) and other problems can help children overcome and possibly avoid struggling with learning disabilities like dyslexia and conditions like ADD.

Adults should also have annual vision testing to catch problems like hypertension, glaucoma, diabetes, cataracts early, when treatment is more effective.

We can also use these test to assess and develop treatment plans for all ages of people struggling with vision problems due to traumatic brain injuries, autism, whiplash and eye strain from computer usage or reading.
